Get To Know The Earth Signs: Taurus, Virgo, And Capricorn

If you’re the one everyone confides to, the person that complete strangers will share their burdens with, then chances are you’re one of the earth signs. Each sign of the Zodiac is associated with one of the four elements.

Since there are twelve signs, each is divided among the four classical elements and each element is shared among three specific signs. In Astrology, these three signs sharing one element is known as triplicity.

The triplicities are one of the most powerful and yet commonly overlooked parts of a Natal chart.

If you’re a water sign, for example, you may overlook information about earth signs, assuming it doesn’t apply to you. But it can! Even if your Sun is in a water, fire, or air sign, you may have other significant planets in earth signs. Even if you have no planets in an earth sign, you will still have houses in earth signs.

It’s also worth studying the triplicities for the purpose of learning how to relate to people who have dominant planets in the earth signs so you can better understand your compatibility with others. Earth signs help you to understand why some people seem so calm, patient, stubborn, or set in their ways, for example. (If you want to create your free birth chart, read this article too)

While Astrology can seem complicated, when you break it down to the basics, it’s quite simple to understand. Each sign has an archetypal meaning that helps contribute to personality. Each element also flavors the sign with a specific shared nature. Of course, there are some nuances, as you’ll see when we explore the three earth signs.

Common Earth Sign Traits

While each specific sign differs according to their own nuances, there are some traits all earth signs have in common.

  • Career-focused
  • Cautious
  • Patient
  • Reliable
  • Trustworthy
  • Loyal
  • Honest
  • Grounded
  • Slow-moving
  • Practical
  • Determined
  • Strong-willed

Earth is considered the element of manifestation. It represents the final phase in any process. From idea to action, something concrete is creative. Therefore, earth signs have a talent for attraction work and manifestation. The three earth signs are Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. While these signs are unique, as part of the same earth triplicity, they share a number of basic features in common.

Taurus: The Secretly Sensitive Earth Sign

  • Romantic
  • Loves to be pampered
  • Artistic
  • Cultured
  • Sensual
  • Creative
  • Nurturing
  • Materialistic

Taurus is the first earth sign, covering the spring season from approximately April 20th until May 20th, give or take a day or two depending on the year. As the earth sign associated with spring, Taurus is known for being creative, artistic, and romantic. These traits are unique for an earth sign.

Typically, the earth element describes a person who is patient, slow-moving, practical, grounded, and sensible. Earth signs prioritize their physical senses and for Taurus in particular, this is part of their love of comfort and security.

With the planet of beauty and love as this sign’s ruler, Taurus is the most romantic, sentimental, and sensitive of the earth signs. Those born under the sign of the bull are born to create security for others and themselves through acts of nurturing, and also through creating beauty and comfort.

Grounding Energy – The Pros and Cons

While Taurus is creative, nurturing, and loving, the earth element can create a feeling of being disconnected emotionally. Taurus doesn’t want to be told how someone feels, they want to be shown. They have firm boundaries and will take any disrespect as a severe violation. It’s hard to gain their trust at first, but once a Taurus lets their guard down, you’ll have a devoted friend or lover for life.

This is because, true to their earthy nature, Taurus takes time to create a connection. In love, it’s as if they were building a house of solid bricks. It may take time to complete, but it will withstand harsh conditions and last for the long term. Taurus believes in applying this same method to anything they build, even their partnerships and relationships. To a Taurus, love, like a home, is built in careful, gradual stages.

Professional Life & Misconceptions

As you can imagine, all earth signs are like the physical earth in some ways. For Taurus, the earth element creates a connection to nature, animals, and hard work that may require them to get their hands dirty. They don’t mind toil as long as the payoff is deemed worth it.

Ironically, Taurus has a bit of a reputation for being the laziest of the earth signs. This is not altogether fair. Taurus is far from lazy. Yet they have to be motivated or else they’ll procrastinate.

They won’t jump into a project if there is any doubt at all about the value of accomplishing the tasks at hand. If a job, project, or even relationship takes too much work and doesn’t bring enough joy and benefit in return, Taurus may become complacent. Like a rock, they may sit back and allow things to happen in their own timing. Also like a rock, Taurus people are solid, difficult to sway, and obstinate.

Taurus in Love

When Taurus falls in love, their earth element foundation makes them comforting, nurturing but also concrete. They may miss certain jokes that require abstract associations. They may also be all-or-nothing thinkers.

Taurus may hesitate to commit at first because they want to make sure everything is secure in the relationship. They are deeply afraid of being hurt because under their confident exterior is a truly sensitive soul.

They can be affectionate and attentive, and they love admiration and respect. Their word is a vow and their promises are as solid as old oak trees. They expect the same in return. If a friend or loved one is too wish-washy, Taurus may not confront them, but they will make a mental note not to be trusting in the future. They look for people who are as reliable as they are.

Physical contact, especially massage and other displays of affection, help hard-working Taurus people to relax and feel a stronger connection. Earth signs are often silent observers rather than chatty social butterflies.

Taurus has many friends and admirers, but they keep communication focused on what they wish to accomplish. They’ll seldom gossip and usually disdain small talk or idle chatter.

In career, they are drawn to creating comfort, beauty, and security. They may be drawn to work in healing, beauty, fashion, banking, or real estate. Farming and environmentalism also appeal to Taurus.

They can also be great cooks because of their connection to nature and the earth. Herbalism, crystals, and natural methods of healing may be of interest to those born under this sign. They may also take a special liking to animals in general, but also beasts of burden. It’s common for Taurus’ to have a favorite lapdog who is affectionate, adorable, and follows them everywhere. Their kinship with the natural world relates to the earth element.

They don’t like messes, though. A Taurus’s idea of camping may involve many of the comforts of home, only outdoors. Rather than a rugged weekend braving nature’s forces, Taurus will want access to WIFI so they can check work emails and a comfortable air mattress, if not a luxurious RV.

Virgo: The Humble Helper Of The Earth Signs

  • Organized
  • Meticulous
  • Detail-Oriented
  • Predictable
  • Service-Oriented
  • Analytical
  • Critical Thinker
  • Selfless

Virgo is the earth sign associated with the fall season. Typically, Virgo season spans August 23rd to September 21st, give or take a few days depending on the year. While Taurus is the spring earth sign associated with romance and creativity, Virgo is the earth sign associated with fall and therefore, with harvest and healing.

Virgo is as patient as Taurus, as this is inherent to all earth signs. Yet, while Taurus is sentimental and romantic, Virgo is analytical and rational. Ruled by the Messenger of the planets, Mercury, Virgo is known to be detail oriented, meticulous, and resourceful.

This earth sign seeks to create security through health and acts of service to others. Virgos are often humble and even selfless. They are diligent and may work in a robot-like fashion, seldom fatiguing. Virgos will never rush, however. Like all earth signs, they are slow moving and choose a pace that will allow them to accomplish tasks with precision and perfection.

Virgo Careers: Working To Serve Others

They take pride in their work and will be highly critical of everything they produce or create. Because of their active minds, they may be as likely to hold high standards of others. Virgos often think they’re being helpful when in fact they are offering criticism or suggestions they expect others to follow.

The earthy nature of Virgo can make them dependable, yet it also makes them inflexible. Regardless of changing circumstances, they are likely to follow their schedules to the letter. One of the things that frustrates Virgo the most is when they encounter surprises and detours.

They find security in schedules, routines, tasks, rituals, and habits. Their connection to the earth and to nature manifests in a need for predictability. They are also usually excellent gardeners, as they are born during the time of harvest. Virgos can also be highly intelligent and will want to know every detail of a situation. Rather than guessing at how to assemble something, for example, they’ll actually read the instruction booklet.

They’re probably among the few people to read the fine print in their credit card applications and will likely pay off their full tab every month. Virgo, as the sign of the Virgin, is associated with purity and therefore with the idea of living a lifestyle that reflects their values. Often, they are minimalists.

In their careers, they are drawn toward the sciences, medicine, healing, construction, and service roles. They’re also great researchers and may enjoy administrative roles and record keeping.

While all earth signs are concerned with security and abundance, Virgo craves efficiency and is attuned to healing and survival. They aren’t as determined to be comfortable at all costs as Taurus. Instead, they are skilled at making the best of every situation.

More Virgo Quirks

They love to tinker and make things that are useful. They love kitchen and office gadgets, even if using such gadgets doesn’t really save any time at all. If there is one person you could be stranded on a deserted island with, it should be a Virgo. They’ll methodically survey their surroundings and create all the main necessities from scratch, making it look effortless.

Virgos are always helpful and they seldom complain or expect praise. In fact, if you try to thank them, their modesty will kick in. They may deflect any excess attention. They prefer to be supportive, but shy away from the spotlight.

As an earth sign concerned with service and healing, conservation is important to them. They’ll often follow healthy diets and value organic food and environmentally friendly lifestyle choices, such as bicycling or walking to work. If given the chance, Virgo would create their ideal home that was fully secure, sustainable and off the grid.

Virgo’s Slow Path To Love

In love, Virgo is slow to open up. Just when you think a Virgo only likes you as a friend, they’ll candidly express a desire to get serious romantically. One of their biggest barriers to commitment isn’t fear of getting hurt, it’s fear of letting go of control of their schedules and routines. Virgos love repetition and may prefer to live in separate households even for a while into a relationship.

They are nurturing and caring, yet they show it through acts of kindness. It’s not typical for a Virgo to speak eloquently of love. In fact, as an earth sign, they’re more in tune with sensual desires than emotions. Even then, they can be objective and understate their feelings. This can make some people feel like they are detached or dismissive, even when this is not really the case.

Virgos love to fix things. One of the first signs you’ll see that a Virgo likes you is their willingness to give unsolicited advice and to fix anything wrong with your car or home. If you don’t allow a Virgo to help you, they’ll feel confused and rejected. As with all earth signs, Virgos are stable, reliable, and good at suppressing emotions especially when there is work to be done.

Capricorn: The Stoic, Enduring Earth Sign

  • Mature
  • Serious
  • Self-Disciplined
  • Traditional
  • Family-Oriented
  • Conservationist
  • Timely
  • Structured
  • Reserved
  • Business-Oriented

It’s well known that Taurus and Virgo are hard-working and emotionally aloof, but neither comes close to these tendencies in a Capricorn. As the earth sign associated with the winter season, some may think that Capricorns are cold, but this is not really the case. Those born during Capricorn season, approximately December 22nd through January 19th, are primarily focused on practical matters, not emotional connection.

Their path to fostering emotional connection is to sacrifice and working to create a solid foundation for the people they love. They are concerned with creating security through diligent effort and toil. Ruled by the planet of restrictions and Karma, Saturn, the Capricorn has a unique role among the earth signs. Indeed, it’s not an easy role either.

The Sign Of Tough Love & Karma

Of all the earth signs, Capricorn is the wise and mature bearer of hardships. Those born under this sign see it as their mission to teach others through tough love. Capricorns can have two very opposing attitudes toward money. They can be parsimonious and frugal, but can also enjoy their favorite luxuries.

They love the idea of someone starting with nothing and earning a fortune. They may have a pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps mentality. Capricorns are often devoted to their work. Their workaholism is not intended to push others away, but it does make a convenient excuse for those born under this sign to avoid having to deal with difficult situations.

But hardship alone doesn’t scare Capricorn. Capricorns love to endure difficulties if they can prove how their perseverance and determination helped them succeed. What they don’t feel comfortable with are situations that require emotional vulnerability.

Living To Work: Capricorn’s Career

Capricorn careers can range from construction to security, to finance, banking, government work, and positions in business administration. This earth sign creates the framework from which all others benefit. Whether they work in academia, politics, business, or construction, Capricorn sees it as their responsibility to lay the groundwork that others can draw from to succeed.

They may be content to manage from behind the scenes or work in jobs that are independent and give them autonomy. If they can complete a task on their own, they won’t want a team or partner to help, as this often becomes a distraction for them. They can be set in their ways, as is common for earth signs, but their intentions are usually to promote growth and salvage wisdom from the past.

Capricorn Romance: Sustainable Partnerships

In typical earth sign fashion, they prefer to be stoic and unyielding, acting as if nothing fazes them. Capricorns are determined yet they won’t be rushed. In love and all relationships, they carefully evaluate what they’ll stand to gain from a given connection. This doesn’t mean they use their loved ones, but they will approach relationships as if the relationship was a business partnership rather than an emotional matter.

This is why Capricorns can come across as dry, serious, and matter of fact. Capricorns do have a sense of humor, but they will always prioritize work over play. It’s natural for earth signs to be strong willed and determined, Capricorn also sees themselves as responsible for everyone else’s safety. Even from a young age they may be mature beyond their years. They have impeccable timing and take their duties seriously.

In love, Capricorns try to be consistent, reliable, and trustworthy. What they lack in affection and open emotional expression they make up for in stability and practical nurturing. A Capricorn man may not understand the value of romantic gestures but he will treat you to expensive dates and gifts. All earth signs have a materialistic side, but this is more pronounced for Taurus and Capricorn.

Capricorns prefer to keep a low profile. They don’t like to be the center of attention and can be turned off by someone who creates too much drama. One thing that does inspire the romantic and imaginative side of Capricorns is their connection to heritage and to the past. They may have a mythologized view of the “good old days” and are attached to tradition.

They love looking at old photos, visiting museums, and telling stories about their elders. Family is crucial to Capricorns and even when their relationships are conflicted, they’ll seldom if ever abandon their responsibilities to family members.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, the earth signs serve as the foundation for all other signs. They can be strong, silent, stubborn and aloof. Yet they can also be affectionate, nurturing, healing and encouraging. The earth signs are there as a pillar for those in need and may be described as the “rock” that others count on to help them stay grounded. They don’t command appreciation and often their efforts and talents go unrecognize. They’ll continue to serve others regardless, because it is in their nature.

Now that you understand the common traits that unite all earth signs, you’ll be better able to work with compatibility to your advantage. You’ll also understand how to appeal to the motivation and psyche of earth signs.

  1. Anna I really appreciate ALL OF YOUR COMNENTS. I have feelings for a Taurus and he knows it but, he’s married. We connect so well but know our boundaries. All I can say is I wish it was me.? Thanks

  2. Interesting and quite accurate for Capricorn. There is an excellent tie in with things like old photos and museums, aka my studies in Anthropology, which suits me perfectly, it helps make sense of the world and history. Also, it often happens that people will unburden their troubles to me, eg. only last week a woman elaborated on her story with the healthcare system and her elderly mother, she apologized after and my reply was “sometimes we just have to vent”. When I was a newspaper reporter/journalist, people would tell me very intimate things, I think I exude a sense of trust. But one trait that is often omitted with Capricorn, we have a really good sense of humour especially if it is clever. We are also very passionate and firey lovers, this is always downplayed with Capricorn. Thank you, Mariwood ?

    1. Hi Mariwood!

Of course you guys have a devilishly funny side. I do want to applaud you for pointing that out. I know this to be true of Capricorn as well. I am so glad you found similarities of who you are with the article. That brings a smile to my face. Are you keeping up with our Tartoscopes? You might want to check those out weekly as well. I think you’d like them. Blessings to you Mariwood!

  3. I’m capricorn 66 in love with an taurus man 62..but I feel I’m being lovebomb. I have my daughter and grandson living with me. He thought was coming to an empty nest. Our connection was fiery…now he doesn’t do anything..the sex is there. I feel we’re pulling apart..no drama. We’ve been dating over an year. No proposal yet…I’m going through something and I feel it’s wrong timing for him and I. I’m just going let him go. Capricorns don’t need game players in our lives‼️

  4. I’m a cancer inlove with a taurus and failing to understand him at times one moment. We hot and the next cold like we not together so now I’m not sure whether to stay with him or just let go.

    1. Hi Londiwe,

This is actually a great match! Taurus man provides the security and stability that the Cancer woman craves for. He’s a great partner, husband, and this is literally a soul mate union.
You can deeply care for him and love him until he feels your trust on a deep emotional level. He’s hard on the outside but very soft and gentle on the inside. Give him time, if he really cares for you, he will come back.

  5. Am a Gemini lady, seeing a taurus man. He much yet younger than me,hi understand the bit, about he goes 🔥 and cold, when we do get. Get together we ve a lovely time, and weeks goes by then nothing words from him, then when he gets in touch ,he been busy, how long does a text take?

    1. Hi Jocelyn,

it’s his insecurity, not yours, which will put him off. If you show your vulnerable and soft side: he’ll likely find that irresistible. BUT if he thinks you feel like he is stupid or if you come across like you think you are better than he is- this may be an ego wound he has a hard time dealing with.
Understand him further! The more you recognize, honor and respect your differences, the less likely you are to project your own meaning on his behavior and the more easily you can get him to do what you want and this is how you’ll pull him back.

  6. Hi. I’m a virgo woman who loves the aloof Capricorn man. Ugh!! He’s hot/cold, hot/cold….lol patience is the key here with this one.

    1. Hi Tess,
You both have different types of emotional issues that you have to work on as individuals. The Capricorn man can sometimes seem very closed off and emotionally detached.
He has to really work at and get to know someone very well for a long time before he’ll open up and let them in. He will love that you are also a private person which makes him feel “at home” with you.

You will also sometimes do a similar thing as far as taking you time before you start opening up emotionally to him. This can create some tension and friction with the two of you.
Trust is something you two can definitely build up very well but it will take time.
Best of luck to you both!

  7. Dear Anna.

The Taurus sign with me is out of the question .

I was married to one for over forty years and made lots, lots of money and he left me for a Filipina flat broke.

    Sorry all my love Ana

  8. I’m an Aries in love with a Leo. He is a sexy man and this woman adores him. He’s very hard to read sometimes.

    1. Dear Cheryl,

The Leo Man and Aries Woman match could be Soul Mate material. The Aries woman will be happy to know that the Leo man is devoted which will turn her on. He will be turned on by her strength and ability to tell him what she feels.
Once you truly explore your love, passion, and life goals, you’ll find that you are able to come to middle ground that allows you to express yourselves together in a wonderful union. Best of luck to you!

  9. Have been in a 40yr relationship with a gemini…but have lost all feelings..and met an aquarian..at my age I mean to say…but goodness me am reborn what do I do..cant abide to hurt anyone but something is going to break..hopefully not my heart..what to do god only knows..

    1. Hello Mike,
After so many years, couples rarely contemplate parting ways as an option.
You should really seek what’s best for you in this relationship. This also goes for your Gemini.
You need to appreciate and love yourself so much. to the point that your energy rejects anyone who doesn’t know your worth.
This way you won’t feel incomplete with him so that you can allow yourself to be fall in love with another person.
If this is the case, you need to choose the one who is best for you and the one who completes you.
Always remember, you deserve to be loved and respected.

  10. Hi Anna
I have known an dated a Virgo and a Taurus. The Virgo was my first love and it was off and on again for us throughout 30+ years but never could find the timing right, so it’s ended up being good friends. However, your synopsis of Virgo is SPOT ON…for a few minutes I thought you knew him!

Mr Taurus I met more recently. We both are members of a historical society online for our favorite city, New Orleans. We found we had similar thoughts on things so we started a conversation outside the group. My birthday is in October and every year t go as a birthday gift to myself since I was 10 yrs old. This last time I had a huge surprise as he met me there to have dinner on my birthday. He lives in Houston. We had an incredibly fun weekend and made plans to go back for Christmas. He was by far the sweetest, nurturing, funny, irresistible guy I’d ever met. So spot on again with the info regarding a Taurus. Your abilities never cease to amaze my dear friend. You’re an inspiration!
