The Moon sign in Relationship Astrology is a beautiful thing. Often, there is a big emphasis on the planet Venus and its role in our relationships, because it rules how we love and liked to be loved.
But the Moon is just as important in your relationships because the Moon rules emotions, feelings, and our moods. It is the planet that shows us what we need to feel safe and secure in our lives.
Your Moon sign can tell you plain and simple what your needs are, if they are being met or not, as well as the things you need to achieve the emotional nourishment you crave. Knowing your Moon sign is empowering because with this knowledge you can take better care of yourself and the ones you love.
Every different element a Moon sign is in will have different needs. An Air Moon will need a lot of connection, mental stimulation, and conversation in their relationships. While an Earth Moon will need something more sensual like a lot of physical touch and material comfort.
Water Moons need a lot of emotional support and the space to be able to express their raw feelings and a Fire Moon will need a lot of action, adventure, and passion in their relationships.
Knowing all of this is wonderful because you can start to recognize what your own needs are, but also those of your loved ones which just makes it so much easier to love them in the way they want to be loved.

Knowing this information will make it so much easier for you to know how to love and support them in the way they need, as well as expressing your own emotional needs to them.
Moon in Aries
The Moon in Aries needs a lot of action and adventure. You can’t sit still for one second, you need to be on the go all the time. If you sit around and do nothing you can’t start feeling a little antsy and out of control.
You’re the type of woman that shouldn’t be afraid to take action and initiative in your relationships. There is a side of you that enjoys being in control and setting all the plans. You enjoy challenges and coming up with solutions.
It’s important that you don’t feel smothered and caged in your relationships. One of your biggest needs is the feeling of independence and freedom. If you don’t spend enough time doing your own thing you can easily start feeling out of balance.
So, expressing your need for space in your relationship is extremely important. When you have a build-up of stress you can often feel quite angry and fiery, so finding a way for you to express your emotions healthily is important. Taking up exercise to get rid of any extra heat can do wonders for your mood.
You need a partner who is happy to give you space, and who is eager to go on exciting adventures with you. As long as you learn to express your desire for independence, then all should work perfectly for you and your lover.
Moon in Taurus
The Moon is exalted in Taurus, which means that it is in its happiest position here. If you have the Moon in Taurus you tend to have quite solid and stable emotions. You likely enjoy nurturing and taking care of those you love.
The most important thing for you in a relationship is to feel secure. You need someone stable and reliable, as you don’t do too well with someone who is all over the place and brings unnecessary chaos into your life. What you want is a cool, calm, and collected kind of life, and you need a partner who can reflect that.
You need to feel like you can build something with your partner and like you are working towards something. You need to be able to see the growth in the loving care you put into your partnership. You’re not okay with putting your heart and soul into something that isn’t going anywhere.
Another important aspect you need to feel secure in love is physical touch. You’re an incredible sensual person, and you need your partner to give you a lot of affection. Touch is definitely one of your love languages.
It is good for you to take things slow and steady in your relationships. You need to be able to see that you can trust the partner you are with. But the most important thing you need in your relationships to feel secure is to be with someone you can rely on. Dependability is huge for you!
Moon in Gemini
It’s simple if you have the Moon in Gemini, as you need to communicate and exchange information to feel emotionally secure in your relationship. You’re someone who needs a partner who is open to chat to help you with whatever you are going through.
You feel deeply like most people, but the way you process your emotions is through analyzing and thinking them through deeply. Also, you soothe yourself by learning and communicating because when you have all the facts, you feel like you can make the best decisions for yourself and the ones you love.
You need to intellectually understand your emotions and be able to talk about them to your partner. So, when you are in a relationship it is really important for you to feel like you’re in constant connection with your partner. Communication brings a feeling of safety and security to you.
Having a partner who stimulates you intellectually is imperative to your happiness, someone who encourages your curiosity and need to learn and explore facts and knowledge would be best suited to you and your needs.
Moon in Cancer
When you have a Cancer Moon, it means you’re a sweet and caring soul. You just want to be able to be there for others and help them through anything. You’re fantastic at offering emotional support and comfort.
It’s easy for you to pick up on the emotions of others through your highly empathetic and intuitive nature. To feel safe and secure in your relationship, you need to feel like you have a deep, emotional connection to your partner.
Your partner needs to feel like home and your sanctuary away from the craziness of the world. Your domestic life must give you a feeling of belonging and comfort, so a place you can call home makes you feel the most secure in your life.
You need to be careful not to take on the emotions of others and make them your own. Because being so sensitive makes it easy for you to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders, so you need a partner who understands boundaries and your need to escape from the world.
As long as you have a safe place where you feel comfortable enough to regulate and process your emotions you will feel safe and secure, and find your relationships just flow a lot easier.
Moon in Leo
Having the Moon in Leo means that your emotions are vibrant, dramatic, and incredibly warm. You’re someone who lives with a lot of passion and creativity, and you need to express yourself through your emotions.
For you to feel totally secure in your relationship you need a lot of attention and affection from your partner. You want to know that you are their one and only love and your relationship needs a smidge of drama to keep you happy and satisfied.
What you need is, others to help you boost your self-esteem, you can’t help but need an audience because you need to shine. You feel most comfortable when you are the center of attention or receiving praise for something you did well.
This can feel like a lot of pressure for your partner to keep up with, especially if you don’t have a creative outlet. You need to do something exciting that you feel passionate about to fulfill your own emotional needs. Without it you might start to feel quite resentful that you’re not receiving enough attention.
It is really important for you to feel celebrated and supported in your life, but you will feel much happier when you learn to fill yourself with the confidence you rely on from others. As long as you feel supported and loved by your partner you tend to feel secure. All the other stuff is just a bonus!
Moon in Virgo
If you have the Moon in Virgo, you’re a natural nurturer and caregiver. It’s so important for you to feel like you’re useful and helpful to the people in your life. You feel the most stable and secure in your life when you have a good job doing something you love.
You are fantastic at analyzing data and getting things to work properly. You’re all about refinement, purification, and order. A cluttered and disorganized environment is really upsetting to your emotional state of mind.
Thus, you need quite a cool and calm partner, someone who isn’t going to bring you any unnecessary drama in your life. You just want someone who is loyal and who gives you a strong feeling of trust.
Consistency is something you depend on in your relationship. You enjoy the feeling of ritual and having a routine, and this is something you need in a relationship to feel safe and secure enough to be free.
Just be aware that there is a nitpicky side to having the Moon in Virgo. You strive for perfection, but this can be quite hard for your partner to live up to, so you need to remember to be understanding and accept when other’s make mistakes. This will make it much easier for you to deal with your relationships.
Moon in Libra
Peace, love, and harmony are so important for you if you have the Moon in Libra. You are so attuned to the injustices of the world, so it is rather easy for you to feel out of balance when there is even a tiny bit of conflict in your life.
You’re a perpetual peacekeeper and have the art of compromise down. You cannot stand conflict and you do your best to avoid it at all costs. This is why there mustn’t be too much drama and upsets in your relationships.
You need to be with someone who is fair-minded, and knows how to see life from a different point of view. Relationships are really important to you, more so than to most, and having people in your life is what nourishes you most!
But there is a tendency for people with the Moon in Libra to contort themselves into keeping everyone else happy just so that they can avoid any disagreements. You need to learn to stand on your own two feet and not become a pushover because this will only lead to resentment.
Learn to listen to your inner voice when it comes to love and follow your intuition. You may quickly get confused when you listen to the opinions of others, this is why it is so important for you to take care of your own needs before you focus on others.
Moon in Scorpio
If you have the Moon in Scorpio, life can feel pretty intense and overwhelming. Your emotions are quite profound. You just feel everything so much deeper than anyone else, so it can be quite hard for you to feel like you are understood or that your needs are being met.
Your Moon sign needs someone willing to dig deep with you, and isn’t afraid of getting stuck in the muck. You have a calling to transform all your pain into pleasure and then into a purpose, so you need some with enough depth to be able to do this with you.
Your Moon sign thrives off the intensity, but this means you tend to attract a lot of challenging situations to feel all the things you need in order to transform and evolve. This isn’t easy; thus, you need a partner who is willing to support you in the most difficult times.
Someone who can show you a lot of passion, and yet a lot of empathy and understanding. For your Moon sign to feel secure enough to love you need trust, compassion, and sensitivity from your partner.
You need to be able to experience the depth of your emotions and feel the freedom to be able to be vulnerable without judgment.
Moon in Sagittarius
When you have the Moon in Sagittarius, life can feel like a wonderful adventure. You are looking for the ultimate truth in life because you are moving towards the pursuit of greater wisdom. Your greatest need in life is freedom.
You feel most comforted and nurtured by travel, education, and exploring philosophical knowledge. For you to feel emotionally secure in your romantic relationship you need a partner who is happy to give you freedom.
You need to surround yourself with positivity and optimism. There is no way you would be caught being in a relationship with a cynic. You need to be with someone who is as open-minded and spirited as you!
It is so important for you to have the freedom to be able to explore your curiosity and the things that inspire you. You are the happiest when you are experiencing life through learning and discovery.
You need to be with someone who is secure enough to let you be free because you aren’t the type of woman who can be tamed. Live larger than life and follow your ultimate calling.
Moon in Capricorn
When you have the Moon in Capricorn, it is a must for you to feel the highs of accomplishment. Your emotional needs are met in practical ways. You feel happiest when you’re able to do something of value and push yourself towards greater achievement.
You’re the type of person who puts productivity above self-care. You would much rather get the job done than indulge in your emotions because you view being vulnerable as a waste of time. For you, your personal security is tied in closely with how much you have achieved.
This means you’re exceptionally self-reliant. You don’t depend on anyone except yourself because you feel most secure when you are in control of a situation. This can make it quite hard for you to be in a relationship because your partner might feel confused as to how to please you.
You might struggle to find a way to connect with people because it is so difficult for you to open yourself up to trust someone, so much so that you might deny yourself a true emotional connection.
My greatest advice to you would be to try to soften and embrace a more feminine side. You deserve kindness and the generosity of others; you don’t always have to depend on yourself to have all your needs met. People want to love you if you allow them to!
Moon in Aquarius
Out of all the Moon signs, an Aquarius Moon probably needs the most amount of space in order to feel emotionally secure. You get most of your nurturing through learning and communicating with your friends.
You need to feel like you are somehow making the world a better place through your humanitarian work. For you to feel emotionally fulfilled by a partner they need to have the intellectual capacity to understand you.
You process all of your emotions through logic and analysis, and this can be quite hard for someone to understand because to them you might just come across as detached and aloof. This doesn’t mean you don’t care – you just process your emotions through your thoughts.
You need a lot of distance and freedom to sort yourself out. So, a partner that has a great understanding of your need for independence and individuality is always going to work out best for you.
Your emotional responses aren’t very obvious, so your best bet would be to explain to whoever you are dating that you need a lot of space to process your feelings. They should never take your remoteness as indifference towards them. It’s just the way you are!

Moon in Pisces
If you were born with the Moon in Pisces, then your emotional life is full of feeling and imagination. You’re a sensitive soul with boundless creativity and compassion. You have such a big heart full of empathy and understanding.
Your Moon sign needs a lot of emotional safety to feel secure enough to love. A part of you wants to completely merge with the person you are with and be by their side all the time, but another part of you needs to escape and be on your own to deal with your complex emotions.
And that is exactly the right word to describe you; complex. It is really important for you to feel like you are seen and heard by your partner. Understanding and sympathy play a big role in your ability to trust someone enough to be in a serious relationship.
The world can feel quite overwhelming for you because you pick up on everyone’s emotions. It is so important that you find a creative medium in which you can express all your feelings so that you don’t drown in all that emotion.
Having good emotional boundaries with your partner is imperative to you feeling safe and secure. You cannot heal everyone you meet, so you need to learn to put yourself first to be in a happy relationship.
My Final Thoughts
It is clear to see how important the Moon sign is for our relationships. It is the basic thing we need in order to feel happy and emotionally supported in our partnerships. Having this knowledge makes it so much easier to express your needs to your partner.

How do I find out my moon sign and rising sigh?
Hi Anna, yes your finding is fantastic. I’m Moon in Leo and it exactly describes me. I checked my paryner’s Moon, Gemini and is very correct also. It’s helpful a lot, Thank You
My moon is in Capricorn. I think I know now why my relationships are hard. I don’t have a partner at present. But from what I read, My ex may have confused by my behaviours. I am Libra Sun.
Hi Deb!
Wow yes, you’re a unique lady being Libra with Capricorn Moon. Now I’m curious what your rising sign is. It’s worth finding out if you don’t know. I’d love to do a consultation for you to see more of who you are. When you learn, you are able to understand relationships with other people. Wishing you all the very best!
Moon Sign Capricorn and it is scary how spot on it is. I am struggling so much with opening up and i fear that i have ruined my chances with the man i am currently seeing (sun sign Capricorn) because it is difficult to build emotional connection and i fear he will be gone as soon as he meets a woman for whom building emotional connection comes naturally.
What’s worse, i am sun sign pisces (and also Venus), so i actually crave a secure romantic relationship.
Hi Fabi!
While your Sun and Venus are both Pisces, the Capricorn Moon can help ground you which is actually fantastic sweetheart. Earth signs are anchoring. When they’re in one of your crucial pieces to your Astrological make-up; it can alter the norm for your Pisces Sun. Your rising sign and Mars are very important as well as your other planets so don’t sink too far into believing you crave a secure relationship. There is more to you. In fact you could benefit from having your basics look at in your chart. You could always book a VIP consultation with me as well. Keep your head up. I wish you all the very best.
Hi Anna,
I’m still confused over the needs of my partner who is a Gemini. He is not a typical Gemini and in fact, a very reseved one. I often struggled to know what is on his mind.
Hi Jen,
Women love to connect on an emotional level with their partners, but a Gemini man can make this quite difficult. These guys are very logical and rational and they have a really hard time processing emotions, but they have an especially hard time processing the emotions of others.
He just doesn’t operate emotionally and has a really tough time being vulnerable. Of course, this doesn’t mean he doesn’t have emotions. He just chooses not to share it with anyone. This is why he seems reserved.
He has his own way of processing things, and it is very important not to put pressure on him.
I hope all goes well for you both.
I am a Leo and my cancer friend hasn’t asked me to date buh we share an emotional connections .
Hi Ruth,
The Leo woman and Cancer man aren’t an obvious match, that’s true. But with enough understanding from both parties, you two have the capacity to overcome differences to appreciate each other for what you have to offer one another, and even for what you’re unable to offer. You have strengths that connect you together, but your differences make the relationship interesting.
I hope all goes well for you both!
Hi Anna,
I’m a Libra sun with my moon in Aquarius and have been told I’m an Aquarius rising or a Pisces rising..I seem to fit more with an Aquarius rising. My husband is a Gemini with an Aries moon and a Libra or Scorpio rising..its kind of confusing..we are a pretty good match but have our trials, just wondering in you have any insight?
Dear Leslie,
Gemini man Libra woman is one that is actually a really pleasant matches that has the capability of lasting a lifetime. The Gemini man and Libra woman soulmates possibility is definitely there. You both have diverse interests and are likely to share some of those. Your Aquarius Moon is making you observant. You have a unique personality and Gemini needs intellectual challenges which you can easily provide.
Good luck to you both!
Hi Anna,
I enjoyed this article as I didn’t know moon signs were so intertwined with our relationships. I am a Gemini sun, Gemini Venus, Virgo mars, Sag rising, and Taurus moon; He is a Pisces sun, Aquarius Venus, Gemini mars, Virgo rising, and a Taurus moon. We just click, and perhaps it’s because our moons are the same?
Dear Cat,
If both partners in a relationship have this same need for emotional
security (Taurus Moon), achieved through love of home and possessions, their life together will be
far smoother and more rewarding than those partners who have different Moon signs. This is good because you understand each other’s emotional needs.
I hope all goes well for you both!
Sending Love.
My dear Anna,
There is no one who could ever doubt you! My moon sign, Cancer, describes me perfectly on a deeper level than my sun sign, Libra. But I learned that they both seem well balanced and worked well with one another’s attributes.
Next I took a peek at my Gemini who has him moon in Capricorn. Wow, you nailed it, too! In face, we were just talking about letting someone in and being able to trust so as to not let something really good pass by, and how he doesn’t have to rely solely on himself to get things done.
As always the Amazing Astrologer!
Your starry-eyed sister,
Amy
