Most men are not withholding their feelings from you. They are withholding them from themselves. Somewhere early on, a man learns that naming an emotion out loud makes it real, and once it is real, he can be judged for it, left over it, or held to it forever. So the words stay in his throat and he shows you in other ways instead. He fixes your car. He remembers your coffee order. He texts at midnight for no reason at all.
The cruelty of it is that a woman raised to speak her heart reads that silence as absence. She thinks, if he felt it, he would say it. But the depth of his feeling and his ability to speak it are two separate things in a man’s chart, and they almost never grow at the same rate.
What decides the shape of his silence is his element. Every sign has a different thing it is protecting when it goes quiet, and once you know which one you are dealing with, his behavior stops being a mystery.
The Water Signs Stay Silent Because They Feel Too Much
Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are the deepest feelers of the zodiac, and that is exactly the problem. A Cancer man has usually been hurt once badly enough that he decided never to be that exposed again, so he shows love through care and feeding and worry, and says almost nothing. A Scorpio man will not speak a feeling until he is certain you cannot use it against him, which is why he watches you for months before he says a word. A Pisces man often cannot find language for what he feels at all, because it moves through him like weather rather than thought.

Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn do not trust talk. A Taurus man believes that anybody can say the words and that only what you do over years actually counts, so he shows up instead of speaking up. Gemini, Libra and Aquarius will talk to you for six hours about anything except this. A Gemini man deflects into humor the second the conversation turns serious, because lightness is his exit. A Libra man will not say a hard truth if he thinks it might upset the peace between you, so he agrees, smooths, and tells you nothing real. An Aquarius man has usually intellectualized his feelings so completely that he can analyze love beautifully and still not know that he is in it.
These men are not shallow. They are fluent in every language except this one, and asking them to translate on demand is like asking someone to sing in a key they have never heard.
The Fire Signs Stay Silent Because Softness Feels Like Weakness
Aries, Leo and Sagittarius have built an identity on being the strong one. An Aries man reads vulnerability as losing, so he would rather act it out than admit it. A Leo man cannot bear the thought of offering his heart and having it received with anything less than devotion, so he waits until he is certain of you. A Sagittarius man senses that saying it out loud closes a door behind him, and he needs to believe every door is still open.

What Never to Do When He Will Not Say It
Do not pull the words out of him. I have watched more good relationships damaged by the well-meaning conversation that starts with, “I need you to tell me how you feel,” than by almost anything else. Under pressure a man says the safest thing, not the truest thing.
